The majority of dermal fillers last roughly 9 to 12 months, though longevity can vary based on the specific product used and the area of the face being treated.

There are several key differences between dermal fillers and BOTOX®/Dysport® injections. BOTOX/Dysport uses a purified form of botulinum toxin to temporarily relax the muscles responsible for movement-related wrinkles. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, work by physically filling in wrinkles and restoring volume to areas of the face that have become sunken or hollow. Results from dermal fillers are visible right away, while BOTOX/Dysport typically takes several days to reach full effect.

When we consult with our Astoria patients about dermal fillers, we recommend that they protect the treated area for about two weeks afterward, including avoiding sleeping directly on their face.

At the start of your dermal filler visit, your injectable cosmetic specialist will sit down with you to discuss your aesthetic goals. From there, they’ll design a customized treatment plan to help you achieve those goals while ensuring your face still looks natural and expressive. The injection process itself is fast, and most patients describe it as virtually painless. The full procedure usually takes about 15 minutes or less from start to finish. We generally advise dermal filler patients to avoid alcohol, products containing Aspirin, and certain blood-thinning medications both before and after their treatment. Doing so helps minimize the risk of bleeding and excessive bruising. Depending on the type of filler used, you may also need to pause certain activities, so it’s important to follow all post-care instructions carefully. Your physician will provide a personalized set of guidelines specific to your treatment.
